Fur-Farm Cage
Confining animals for their pelts
What it is
A small wire-mesh cage holds one animal, or a pair, on bare mesh flooring. The animal lives there while it breeds and while it grows the pelt.
Where it sits in the system
Rows of identical cages make feeding, waste collection, breeding and handling fast. The cage exists to make holding large numbers of animals cheap, not to house them well.
Welfare concern
The cage restricts movement and denies the animals almost everything their species does. Fear, stereotypic pacing and self-injury follow.
Worth being precise about
Housing standards and the legal status of fur farming vary between countries. Enrichment improves a cage, but it does not return the space or the behaviour of a natural habitat.
